New Nightclub Formats

From the Times music section:

Helping fill the hip-hop void left by the unplugging of Larry's nightclub, nearby Mantra Lounge has switched formats from drum-and-bass/house to "Pioneer Square's new urban nightclub" — to quote a sign on the club's window.

DJ's Doxx and Roc'phella — the latter a Larry's regular — will spin hip-hop on weekends, with reggae on some of the weeknights at Mantra, 210 S. Washington St. (at Second Avenue). The new music programming starts this weekend at Mantra, which opened in 2003 (taking over from Habana).

Larry's, meanwhile, has been closed since its liquor license was suspended, but a voice message promises "we should be open here very shortly ... we will be changing our format slightly, however we will still be a dance club." For more information, phone Larry's at 206-624-7665.

New affordable rental housing

From today's PI Biz Brief
Seattle's Pioneer Square neighborhood is slated to get new affordable rental housing when the 13-story Fortson is completed in 2007, a project investor said Monday.

Homestead Capital said the $26.6 million development at 201 Yesler Way would offer 132 studio and one-bedroom units and 1,500 square feet of retail space. Homestead, which is investing about $10.8 million in the project, said the housing is geared for service workers, people with entry-level office jobs and people with disabilities.
Here's Homestead Capital's project page for the "Yesler Street Apartments".

12th Man Party Wrapup

The PI and The Times each have their own accounts of the festivities in the neighborhoods.

They seem to be in agreement that the happy mob spread forth out of Qwest Field into Pioneer Square, chanting "Super Bowl" and "Detroit."

I think this is my favorite story
Scalper to fan seeking two tickets, "$300 each."

Fan to scalper, "$200."

Scalper, "$300."

Fan, "$250."

Scalper, "$300."

Fan, "$280."

Scalper, "$300."

Fan, begrudgingly, "OK, $300."

Let's just say it was a seller's market yesterday.
And for posterity, here's more on the actual NFC Championship game

Blue Friday today!

Sorry for the late notice, I just picked this up
Friday [today!] is being considered "Blue Friday" in Seattle with replicas of the "12th Man" flag being raised on three different buildings downtown and "12" buttons being handed out at Westlake Center and in Pioneer Square. The team is asking fans to wear Seahawks clothing or blue attire to work. "The spirit of the 12th Man has played a central role in our success," Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke said.

Seahawks = Cha-Ching!

The Seahawks' current post-season success isn't just good for Seattle's morale, it's also a shot in the arm for Pioneer Square's business community. And the neighborhood is getting in the spirit of the 12th Man.
In an attempt to capitalize on the Hawks' success, the Pioneer Square Community Association is getting ready to unveil banners and flags throughout Seattle's oldest neighborhood. Sure it's good for community spirit now, but Craig Montgomery is banking on the future.

"It's both about celebrating the Seahawks, and highlighting the neighborhood," says Montgomery, who is the executive director of the PSCA.

"In the long term, when people see the neighborhood, they'll want to visit here."
I wonder if the banners will outnumber the used heroin needles?

Occidental Square: 3rd worst in the world

According to the Project for Public Spaces. Our office overlooks Occidental Square. Other than the occasional concert or bocce ball game in the summer, the park is just one city block of drugs and destitution.
The state of this square has kept the whole district from becoming a great destination. We would venture to say that property values are now at 60% of what they would be with a thriving square to give energy and stature to this critical historic area.
Here's what the city plans to do about it

Pioneer Square: Where Seattle Starts

I did a search for "pioneer square blog" and didn't find one, so I figured I should start one up, since I work there. Welcome!
